What was it like when you first found out? That is, when you first looked at the shelves at your local store and couldn't find the barleywines, Belgians, and bocks? Made your heart sink, didn't it? ******************Knowing that one-third of all beer styles are illegal in Iowa? **********************

Now's the time to get involved and make a difference. We at Lift the Limit want to do more than tell you what's going on...we want you to get involved. Sign up for the Lift the Limit News to learn how things are developing - and how you can help change Iowa's 5% beer law!

AND WHILE YOU'RE HERE, BE A MODEL CITIZEN.

Here's the thing about this movement. We don't really want you to make much noise about this issue right now - not until we solidify our alliances and create a critical mass of support. No letters to the editor. No calls to elected officials. We've learned that the worst thing for this particular movement is to catch someone off guard - especially an important stakeholder or a key legislator. We are working on navigating the tricky waters of this political landscape so we can inform, educate, and build alliances.

That said, here's what you can do - right now - to help Iowa eliminate the 5% ABW cap.

TALK TO YOUR LOCAL BEER-RELATED BUSINESSES.

We need to focus on something: We've heard from a handful of you something like "Well, I was in Centerville talking to a local beer store guy and he'd never heard of Lift the Limit." or "I was at a brewpub in West BigBurb and they didn't know about the 5% law." That's kind of helpful, but not really. It just tells us that you may have missed an opportunity to gain a Lift the Limit supporter.

Here's how you can help:

1. Ask to talk to the manager, if you're not doing so already.
2. Write down www.liftthelimit.org on a piece of paper for them. Okay, sure, we do have flyers you can use, but the majority of you won't be carrying around Lift the Limit pamphlets when you're out having a beer with friends or picking up a six-pack at your local store. Those of you who do have the passion to carry them around, I really appreciate it.
3. Ask the businessperson if someone from Lift the Limit can contact them to gain their support in a change of the law.
4. Send me, Mike, an e-mail with the business name, location, phone number and a contact.

Be active, not passive. Help us spread the word, educate beer businesses, and build momentum state-wide. Talk to businesses and talk to us.
